The right HR software can make all the difference in an organization’s daily operations. Anyone comparing alternatives quickly notices that most solutions cover nearly all traditional HR tasks—yet which system truly simplifies day-to-day work? A recent user study provides practical insights. We use these results to compare HRlab as an HR Works alternative and show how both systems perform in actual business environments.

Common Features
HRlab and HR Works are both cloud-based platforms covering many core areas of modern HR software: employee management, digital personnel files, time and attendance tracking, leave and absence management, document storage, and employee self-service (ESS) features. Both systems support the centralized organization of HR processes and intentionally target mid-market companies (SMEs). However, key differences emerge in feature depth, user-friendliness, and customer support services, as highlighted in the results of the Professional User Rating: Human Resources 2026.
Background of the User Rating Study
This independent analysis by the Heise Group is based on 5,940 feedback responses regarding market-relevant HR suite providers across the DACH region. Survey participants included HR leaders and employees actively using the software in their daily business routines. The evaluation assessed both the software vendors and the software solutions themselves. Results are presented as index values, enabling a direct comparison between provider capabilities and solution performance.
Overview of Evaluation Criteria:
- Vendor Rating: Innovation, customer service, pricing structure, information and training offerings, sustainability
- Solution Rating: General core characteristics, practical day-to-day value, long-term satisfaction, and brand loyalty
Update 2027: HRlab Named Champion Once Again
In the Professional User Rating: Human Resources 2027 study conducted by techconsult, 39 Cloud HR Suite providers were evaluated directly from practical application. As a result of the PUR Diamond 2027 rating, the study—and the users themselves—awarded HRlab the title of "Champion" for the third time.

Vendor Rating: Why HRlab Stands Out as an HR Works Alternative
This section examines both providers and how users experience HR Works and HRlab across various domains. A key focus is on Innovation: How actively do the vendors develop new features, and how comprehensive is their range of HR solutions and add-on tools?
In terms of Service and Support, the study looks at accessibility, consulting competence, handling of support requests, and the quality of documentation or trial access. For Channel Partners, availability on the ground and tailored consulting play a major role.
Other factors included in the evaluation are online presence, sustainability, pricing and procurement models, as well as information, consulting, and training services.
Particularly relevant for comparison is Vendor Satisfaction in Context of the Solution, as it offers a direct picture of overall satisfaction with the respective software platform. HRlab achieved a very high score of 80.0 points here. This index value is calculated from the following criteria:
- The solution delivered on the provider's promises
- I would purchase from this provider again
- I would recommend this provider to others

Solution Evaluation Results
Beyond the vendor rating, the central question remains: How useful is the software in real-world application? How well does it work in daily business? Three core areas were evaluated:
- General Core Characteristics: Measures how comprehensively the software covers core HR modules, its functional depth, and compliance with GDPR and regulatory standards. Usability, reporting/analytics capabilities, open APIs/integrations, automated updates, cost transparency, and future-readiness also play key roles.
- Solution Value / Utility: Evaluates how effectively the software accelerates HR workflows, boosts productivity, reduces administrative workload, increases transparency, and drives employee engagement and retention.
- Product Loyalty: Highlights overall user satisfaction, willingness to continue using the software, and likelihood of recommending it to others.
Overall, this assessment delivers practical insights into how well the software performs in everyday workflows, supports HR operations, and shapes the user experience.

Conclusion: HRlab Delivers as a Strong HR Works Alternative

While HR Works delivers solid performance, it falls slightly behind in innovation, customer support, and total solution scope.

HR Works also achieves strong results and represents a reliable choice, but sits slightly behind HRlab in this comprehensive user survey.
